British Council Indonesia Newsletter 20 October 2011

British Council CEO, Martin Davidson CMG, delivered a general lecture on ‘Cultural Relations in the 21st Century’ at the University of Al Azhar Indonesia (UAI) on 6 October 2011.

350 students from five state universities in Jakarta: UAI, Bina Nusantara International, Sampoerna School of Education, the London School of Public Relations Jakarta, and the Catholic University of Atma Jaya, attended the lecture.

With its huge population and cultural diversity, Indonesia is an important country for regional and global development, and a key partner for the UK.

Mr. Davidson was delighted to see that the British Council in Indonesia has the "right-sized" operation to match the grant while building up a good range of partnerships and income.

Europe on Screen

This year in Europe on Screen, British Council Indonesia will be screening “Nowhere Boy” – a 2009 British biopic about John Lennon‘s first years and adolescence.

The film screening will take place in the following cities in Indonesia: Jakarta, Semarang, and Yogyakarta, from 29 October until 23 November this year.

At the fringe event is a performance by The Banery entitled: "Remembering the Beatles Night” at Erasmus Huis on 9 and 10 November  2011.

Jakarta Fashion Week

The Jakarta Fashion Week (JFW) 2011 is a fashion event held annually in collaboration with major stakeholders of the fashion industry as well as the media.

The third JFW will be held in 12-16 November  2011 at the Pacific Place shopping mall.

Mainly a vehicle to demonstrate Indonesia’s wealth of talent and creativity, the JFW provides support to the Indonesian fashion industry; with an ultimate goal of turning Jakarta into a major fashion hub in the region and the world.

This year Indonesian fashion designer Oscar Lawalata, who was the winner of the British Council’s IYCE 2009, will collaborate with Justin Smith, the winner of 2010 British Council’s UK Young Fashion Entrepreneur Award.

The collaboration aims to show how through design Oscar Lawalata and Justin Smith can reach beyond the role of common designer and become a kind of cultural bridge which can overcome traditional barriers.
